A FREE Place to Visit in Philadelphia-The Fireman’s Hall Museum

Traveling in big cities can be expensive. That’s why it’s always great when you stumble upon something FREE! The Philadelphia Fireman’s Hall Museum is a great place to explore and it won’t lighten your wallet.

Fireman’s Hall Museum-

Philadelphia is home to the very first firehouse (thanks Ben Franklin!), so it is only fitting that it would host such a great fire museum. The building has been refinished from the original 1898 firehouse to hold relics from fire history.

Where is Fireman’s Hall Museum located?

The museum is located in Old City Philadelphia at 147 N. 2nd Street. Philadelphia is a great city to wander with so many historical sights all around. We stumbled upon this museum after our visit to Elfreth’s Alley. If you have a car with you in the city, the closest parking is at the Old City Parkominium, located at 231 N 2nd St, Philadelphia, PA 19106. The museum will validate parking for you.

Exhibits

While I am not generally super interested in fire history, I did find the museum to be worth wandering…especially for the price and availability of air conditioning on a hot summer day! The collection includes items such as:

  • Fire Marks
  • Parade Hats of the 1800s
  • Historical photos of Philadelphia Fires
  • Fire safety information
  • Fire fighting tools throughout history
  • Historical fire wagons & trucks

If you have little ones who are obsessed with fire fighters or vehicles, this is definitely worth the stop! My family probably spent about 30 minutes walking through the museum, but you could easily spend more time enjoying the exhibits.
