Going back to work after Baby

The age old question of going back to work after baby is a difficult, if not impossible one to answer. Keep reading to see the easiest way to find a new job while parenting.

The difference between a man and a woman telling their office they are welcoming a new baby to their home is amazing. If a man announces this they are met with congratulations. When a woman announces it everyone immediately asks how much maternity leave they are taking and if they will return to work.

I worked throughout all three of my pregnancies and for varying reasons was unable to return to my job after maternity leave each time. This put me back to the dreaded job search.

Once you have a child it becomes a lot more difficult to sit down and apply to job after job, you are constantly interrupted by your little angel. I found job boards the easiest way to apply. Uploading your resume to one place and then choosing the jobs that work for you is a lot faster than sitting back and waiting for employers to search you out!

At this point (for better or worse) I have given myself “professional job searcher” status. Here are a few of the ways I have successfully found jobs after motherhood:

CareerBuilder

Career Builder allows you to upload several different resumes. This comes in handy if you are open to different types of opportunities. If I am looking for a teaching gig my resume is going to look a lot different than when I’m looking for an administrative position.

Indeed

Indeed tends to have a wider range of positions listed than CareerBuilder. If you are looking for more non-traditional work and don’t want to scroll through Craigslist, this may be the best option for you.

Zip Recruiter

Zip Recruiter is how I found my last job (due to Covid I’m back to Stay at Home Mom status). It is extremely user friendly and a nice change of pace from other sites. Zip Recruiter neatly lists jobs, their locations and sometimes the pay in little boxes, instead of row after row like other sites. They currently have special markers for employers hiring during the Covid crisis.

After you Apply-

After applying to a job most of these sites will give you a confirmation e-mail-save these! Eventually one of them is going to call or e-mail you and you won’t remember what you applied for! The confirmation e-mails can take you back to the job posting. Before any interviews it’s important to recall what the position was, the hours, requirements and pay.

Applying for a new job is always difficult, but it is even more complicated once you become a parent. Hopefully these three ‘one stop shopping’ job search engines will be helpful to you!
