TLDR: Recipe for Mickey Mouse marshmallow treats and an at-home version of a meal from The Plaza restaurant at Disney World.

At this point in our Disney staycation, the weekend is over and it is back to homeschooling. For the sake of readability and organization I am going to do a separate post on all of our Disney homeschooling activities. You can find them here and here. In the meantime I will continue with our daily food updates this week!

Today we once again concentrated on the Magic Kingdom (see yesterday’s menu here) and made homemade Mickey Mouse Rice Krispy Treats and then enjoyed a meal “at” The Plaza for dinner.

Our Mickey treats were not nearly as pretty as the real thing, but they sure were cheaper and the kids didn’t mind a bit!

Materials Needed:
-9×13 Pan
-Mickey Mouse cookie cutter like this one:

-Microwave safe mixing bowl
-Mixing spoon
-Waxed paper

-I also highly suggest a Silpat mat, they are great non-stick mats that are perfect for a project like this!

Ingredients:

  • One bag large marshamallows
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • 3 TBS. Butter
  • Cooking spray
  • 1 bag chocolate chips
  • Optional toppings: Heath bar crumbles, sprinkles, butterscotch chips…get creative!

What follows is my quick and easy NO STOVE method to making Rice Krispy Treats!

  1. Spray microwave safe bowl and 9×13 pan with cooking spray & dump in the entire bag of marshmallows.
  2. Add the butter (softened helps but not necessary)
  3. Spray mixing spoon with cooking spray
  4. Microwave at 30 second intervals, stirring in between. Continue until marshmallows are completely melted and no longer holding any form.
  5. Quickly add the 6 cups of cereal into the marshmallows and combine.
  6. Place the mixture into the 9×13 pan
  7. Take a piece of waxed paper the length of the pan and use it to smash down and compact the treats.

If you have sprayed everything properly you should have very little and very easy clean up!

Allow the mixture to harden for about 30-60 minutes. Then use your cookie cutter to cut out Mickey heads.

The kids actually had a really tough time with this and I wound up taking over. We were able to get four Mickey’s out of the pan and I somehow managed to help eat the scraps…

Next microwave your chocolate chips in 20 second intervals, stirring in between, until melted and thin. There are two methods to the chocolate:

a) Spoon chocolate over the treats
b) Melt enough chocolate that you can dip the treats

While the chocolate is melting, get your toppings ready on a plate or shallow bowl. We used sprinkles (we try to stay artificial dye free at our house, which is why the sprinkles are so pale!) and Heath bar crumbles.

Treat toppings

Of course, I only had half a bag of mini-chips on hand when we did this so I just spooned the molten hot chocolate over the treats.

Immediately after the chocolate, dip your treat into the toppings.

Ours were clearly not done on a professional level, but they tasted just as good!

Dinner at The Plaza

The last time we ate at The Plaza restaurant in the Magic Kingdom, I had been looking forward to my fried green tomato BLT for months! That day I felt miserable and couldn’t even finish my meal-major disappointment. Even worse I found out yesterday that it isn’t even on the menu anymore.( I always check for menu changes on AllEars.net.)

Either way, our menu for the evening was fried tomato BLTs, Plaza fries and milkshakes!

Notice I said fried tomato-not fried green tomato- because of course I’m doing all of this in a pandemic and the store didn’t have any. The original sandwich also had an Alabama white BBQ sauce on it. I followed a recipe from Pinterest and it was awful. It tasted like pure vinegar and went promptly into the trash. We opted for regular mayo instead. Dinner was still a success and our fancy new milkshake glasses made it a Disney Magic Moment.
