I’ll take my Corona with lime…

Embracing the situation and figuring out how to enjoy Disney World from home.
The Coronavirus, Covid-19, will define the year 2020. It has brought with it death, destruction and disappointment. We are so very lucky at my house to be safe & able to work from home. However the multitude of things we are missing out on is getting hard to explain to the kids.
First dance competitions, basketball playoffs, 5th grade graduation, time with family, birthday parties, weddings… and perhaps the worst for the kids, we are missing out on a Disney trip.
This trip has been in the making for a year and a half. It has been rescheduled twice already due to job changes and babies being born (not mine!). Rescheduling again is a pretty big blow.
M’s favorite guy in the whole world is Mickey Mouse. He calls him Hot Dog (because of the Hot Dog Dance…if you’re unfamiliar you must not have kiddos yet!) In fact he said, “Hot Dog” before he said, “Mama”. The whole family has been looking forward to watching this little boy’s eyes light up while meeting his hero-and it ain’t happening.
Now again, I know these are first world problems, but disappointment is disappointment and I think we’re allowed to grieve the trivial things we are missing right now. The stack of Disney shirts sitting in my room probably won’t fit the kids by the time we get to travel and they are taunting me daily. Just like everyone else on the planet I’m sick of hearing about Corona-unless it’s being served with a lime.
New Plan:
If I can’t take the kids to Disney, I’m going to bring Disney to them! I would say 70% of our enjoyment of Disney World is in the food they have to offer. The variety and theming of the restaurants is amazing. So as usual, my new plan will revolve around eating! I will also be basing our homeschooling on Disney themed lessons this week.
Arrival Day:
When the kids wake up this morning they will have “arrived” in Disney World! I used these removable wall stickers of the Disney characters to decorate our dining area.
We will be having a “character brunch” (no way I’m waking up early to make a big breakfast if I don’t have to!). Mickey waffles are a rite of passage in Disney World (see photo)- so we definitely need to have them this week.
For our brunch we’ll make the homemade version thanks to our Mickey waffle maker! To be fair these tend to turn out more like pancakes but the shape is there and they are still tasty.
Here is the finished product:
I’m hopeful the kids will find this a fun way to move through our next week.
Stay tuned for the next meal….Guy Fieri’s Chicken Guy!

I definitely think that we should all be allowed to grieve the things that are being cancelled, even if they are first world problems. That disappointment is still a real emotion and doesn’t diminish the bigger struggles in any way. For example, we’ve had 2 camping trips cancelled already due to the closure of our provincial parks, waiting to hear about the trips we have planned coming up. While that certainly isn’t the same level of struggle as losing a friend or a family member to the disease, it still really sucks! I’m glad that you’ve found a way to bring the Disney to your home and make the best of this situation.
